The authors have assembled a great deal of oral and written histories from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects of the 1930s, as well as the Indian Pioneer Papers of Oklahoma. Together, the words of these pioneer women of many races and ethnic backgrounds capture early life in Oklahoma. Unfortunately, the editors’ handling of this material is a bit impersonal and leaves the reader less engaged; its sterile academic approach with long chapter introductions are followed by short, unnamed pioneer histories headed by titles such as Anglo, b. 1888, or Delaware, b. none given. Overall, this book missed the mark on an otherwise great concept.
