7. Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave (Golden, CO): Mr. & Mrs. William F. Cody are buried atop Lookout Mountain here, and the museum celebrates Buffalo Bill’s life, times and legacy. You can visit plenty of Buffalo Bill museums across the U.S., but this is the one founded in 1921 by Johnny Baker, Cody’s foster son.

Yet the museum isn’t just about Buffalo Bill. “Western Style: A Convergence of Cultures” opened in October to show how Anglo, Hispanic and Indian cultures have influenced style in the American West. Featuring boots, Navajo rugs, Indian jewelry, hats and even Hopalong Cassidy’s pearl-handled pistols, the temporary exhibit runs through September 14, 2008.
