2. Museum of the Fur Trade (Chadron, NE): Since 1955, this has been the place to learn about the history of the fur trade, whether you’re wandering into the reconstructed trading post of James Bordeaux, researching period firearms or just stopping through on your way to the Black Hills.
Last year, the museum brought in “The Mountain Men,” a special exhibit at Lindeken Hall, the museum’s newest addition, which examined the 35-year era of the beaver trade. From traps and plunder to buckskins and beaver hats, the exhibit covered just about every possible angle, including the international boundary dispute over Oregon.
