3. The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History (Albuquerque, NM): Mother’s Day 2007, and the museum was packed. We mean PACKED! All because of the opening of a special exhibit, “Dreamscape Desperado: Billy the Kid and the Outlaw in America.” Billy the Kid drew a full house—for Mother’s Day!? (Full disclosure: The exhibit brought in True West brass and contributors, but even we were blown away by the public reaction. They weren’t coming for this rag. They came for Billy.)

What the 8,000-square-foot exhibit, showcasing both Billy of historical significance and Pop Culture fame, proved is that people are still interested in Western history, and that if you do it right, they will come by the busloads.
