4. Desert Caballeros Western Art Museum (Wickenburg, AZ): Any museum that can dream up the definitive, comprehensive exhibit on the bola (which is how Arizonans spell bolo) is first rate. Pssst...you still have time to check out “The Bola: Arizona’s Tie That Binds,” which runs through September 7.

  Across 25,000 square feet, the story of the West is told through artifacts, dioramas and art (you can’t beat the annual Cowgirl Up! invitational show and sale). Witty, wonderful and sometimes irreverent, the Desert Caballeros museum is an oasis in the Sonoran Desert. It’s no wonder museum attendance has doubled over the past seven years.
