6. Museum of the American West (Autry National Center, Los Angeles, CA): Few museums showcase the essence of the Hollywood West better than the museum Gene Autry founded
in 1988. (We’re still in awe of the Sergio Leone exhibition of 2005-2006.) The museum celebrated Gene’s 100th birthday in style with its “Gene Autry and the 20th-Century West: The Centennial Exhibition, 1907-2007.”
Yet the Museum of the American West, part of the Autry National Center’s trifecta of institutions (Southwest Museum of the American Indian and the Institute for the Study of the American West), focuses on more than Hollywood. It helps visitors understand not only the Western myth, but the reality of our history and heritage.
