8. Adams Museum & House (Deadwood, SD): Yes, there’s more to do in Deadwood these days than play blackjack. If you want to escape the peeving sound of slot machines, head over to this wonderful museum that focuses on Deadwood and the Black Hills. Yes, there’s plenty on Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, but you’ll also learn a whole lot more.
A two-year renovation of the 75-year-old building ended in 2007 with the completion of two galleries. But the Adams’s staff is far from done, launching a 10-year strategic plan to increase not only attendance and funding, but also encourage a better understanding of the region’s history through changing exhibits, lectures, workshops and film festivals.
