9. Patee House Museum (St. Joseph, MO): For more than 40 years, this museum—located in a historic building that has served as the Pony Express headquarters, a hotel (three times), a girl’s college and a factory—keeps bringing in visitors. Its amenities even include a saloon
and carousel.

The museum staff kept busy this past year, marking the 125th anniversary of Jesse James’s death (the house where Jesse met his demise is next door), playing host to Pony Express events and the National James-Younger Gang’s annual convention. Museum director Gary Chilcote wins the award for Best Presentation Title: “The Strange Case of Greg May, or How the Head of a Jesse James Collector in Northern Iowa Ended Up in a Bucket of Concrete 400 Miles Away."
